On Pharisees and Pole Dancing

See, here’s the deal, as I interpret it. Apparently sexy women oppress so-called unsexy women just by existing. Yet, all women are supposed to feel sexy and empowered. I would presume that to mean ALL women, both those considered sexy by our culture and those not. And yet, if a culturally accepted “sexy” woman chooses to wear her sexuality on her sleeve, she is de facto oppressing those of us who prefer to stay a little more covered up. So I guess the ability to feel sexy is only allowed to those who don’t.

*um*

Yet, here I am. An overweight drudge of a housewife w/minivan and thin, lank hair, not feeling the least bit oppressed by, say, strippers with tattoos or young chicks in a big city who take pole dancing lessons. More power to them, because I, most of the time, am secure enough in my own femininity that I am not threatened by theirs. So why are all the highly educated, ivory tower feminists up at arms about this? I mean, I’m not educated, I don’t go to a gym or live in a chic loft or craftsman cottage, I don’t own the trappings of a Fabulous Life, I don’t read Focault or Spinoza, and I don’t listen to alternative rock (or whatever the Music of Choice is for the Modern Feminist…maybe something world, by Indian women). I don’t do those things they seem to think are necessary to live a Self Actualized Life.

And yet, in my ignorance, I am happy. I do that which they yodel about so eloquently, I live the life I choose. Yet I am supposed to be threatened by beautiful and sensual women? Whyzat?

Here is my fabulous life: a life companion of my choosing, 4 children to share my life with, and to help spread the joy. We’ve lived through enough to appreciate what we have, without being ruled by it. I have Faith that sustains me, Joy that sees me through sadness, and love that wraps it all up in a package I can carry with me everywhere. There is no room in that for envy or rancor. Those things are poisonous, and when a person allows themselves to be ruled by envy and rancor, they might as well sprinkle the arsenic on their salad, because it’s just as destructive, just as insidious.

Truly, I pity people who look for gremlins in every action. I realize there are people who really have been hurt in their lives, and that makes it hard for them to trust. Those aren’t the folk I’m talking about. I mean the people who see evil motives in everything other people say, especially if they don’t agree with what’s being said. The fact is, not everything has an evil motive. I don’t dye my hair blonde in order to oppress brunettes, or to hide the fact that I’m not really blonde. I do it because I look good as a blonde, and I like looking good. For me, not to oppress, just for me. I am savvy enough to know that I would look silly in a miniskirt, so I don’t wear them. Not because I feel oppressed by miniskirts, or because I don’t want men to notice me, but because I have enough pride to know what I look good in.

So when someone takes offense because a person feels good about her body, I think they need to get a life! When someone, in the name of defending another person, crawls down the craw of a person for performing an act they find offensive, I suggest that, if they’re offended, they should refrain from exposing themselves to that which they find offensive.

Here’s how it works for me:
I dont like pornography. I don’t like watching people have sex, and the physiques of the women tend to intimidate me. I know this. So I don’t watch it. As long as I keep the images out of my head, I’m fine. Last time I checked, it was not required to watch pornography if you needed basic goods and services. I mean, you don’t have to watch it to get your drivers license, or have your teeth cleaned, right? So if something bothers you so much, and offends your sensibilities, stay away from it. It get off the case of people who do watch it, it’s there business, right? Doncha think?

It’s both sad and amusing to me that people seem to think they have the right and obligation to point out the character flaws in other people. In the Bible, the people Jesus Christ would get the most riled with were the Pharisees- the legal minds. They were so wrapped up in following the minutia of the law that they forgot the spirit behind it, that spirit that said put others needs before your own. (read Matthew 23). The people who are attempting to dictate other’s behavior, without recognizing the intrusive and destructive nature of their own actions are today’s Pharisees.
